Stormy Petrel II- Hatteras trips

The Stormy Petrel II is our own boat, which we use for most of our trips.  She is 61 feet long, and she was built in Kennebunk, Maine by Dwight Raymond in 1996.  She has a USCG certificate of inspection for 41 passengers up to 100 nautical miles offshore from Cape May, NJ to Cape Lookout, NC.  For more elbow room, we limit our birding trips to 30 passengers during the warmer months and even less during winter.  We have all of the necessary safety equipment and undergo annual inspections by the Coast Guard.  The hull of Stormy Petrel II is a solid fiberglass.  Her power comes from two Detroit Diesels (671 turbos- about 400hp each)  with top speed of about 20 knots.  We plan to re-power the boat this spring with two 600 hp Lugger Deisels, and will make her faster.  Unlike the Country Girl, our boat has a full walk-around deck, and our bathrooms (two) are at deck level with household toilets.  There is an incredible amount of deck space, especially up front.   Brian Patteson, skipper of the Stormy Petrel II, has been running pelagic birding trips from NC and VA since the 1980's, and looks forward to many more years of pelagic birding and charter fishing off Cape Hatteras.

Country Girl- Manteo trips

Both the Miss Hatteras and the Country Girl were built nearby and have hulls designed for the local sea conditions.

Our Manteo trips are aboard the Country Girl (new in 1990).  The Country Girl is a 57' sport fishing boat with space for 25 birders.  She is also very fast, enabling us to reach the Gulf Stream (usually 50-55 miles from the dock) in just a couple of hours, giving us plenty of time offshore.  Captain Allan Foreman has been taking bird students offshore for over 30 years and loves to chase down the occasional rarity with his fast boat when sea conditions permit.
